Bad teams work alone. Good teams work together. A Kroos, Messi, Neymar or Ronaldo, are not enough to have a winning team. Even four top players in one team are not enough.
The Team winning the World Cup is like a company’s winning Team. You need not only top players, but also the right coaching and the right manager to create a winning Team.
In this edition, we offer you 5 golden rules about how best to treat your “players”, as a manager-coach, and to help and support them individually and collectively to be an excellent and winning Team! You can replicate some traits of Misters Dalić, Deschamps, Martinez or Southgate. Yes, You can.
A little test in this edition will help you to assess whether You are an exceptional manager-coach. Below are five questions, the more Yeses, the better your performance. Even better, for your assessment to be more objective, ask one of your Team players to reply for You! 😉
At the World Cup, some teams won more easily and better, not because of their great players – Germany, Brasil, Argentine, Portugal were all out – but because of their exceptional coaches. These coaches bring out the best in their people. They don’t only know the game, but they can also create top players and make winners.
At work, it is slightly different yet very similar. An exceptional coach, or “manager-coach” needs to apply these 5 golden rules to have a winning Team:

At work, it is slightly different yet very similar. An exceptional coach, or “manager-coach” needs to apply these 5 golden rules to have a winning Team:
- Watch and Listen
The best manager-coaches know their team members. They observe them, they take time to listen to them, and they observe their actual behaviour. They know and understand not only how they work and what their personality and best traits are, but they also know how they “tick”: what drives them, what do they enjoy, what bores them, what’s demotivating them. They know them also as humans, what they do for fun, outside of their work, and what’s important for them outside of their work life.
Do You know your Team members, with the details mentioned above?
- Assign and Empower
Knowing their team members, the best manager-coaches assign the right tasks to the right person. They do and act upon what they watched and perceived about their team players. They empower them and give them the right level of responsibility, authority or accountability, so they do the best job, with the highest joy.
Do You reflect what exact task You give to whom, and for what specific reason?
- Use Positive Words
When their team players are doing, performing and implementing, the best manager-coaches constantly use positive words, encourage them and provide the right kind of feedback and comments, when needed. The best manager-coaches are constructive. They use specific positive comments to spur their team members. They offer the right areas for improvement with concrete solutions and options. They speak positive language and have a positive attitude vis-à-vis their team.
Do You use constantly positive, encouraging, motivating language?
- Inspire = Motivate and Encourage
The best manager-coaches, that I have the privilege to work with, inspire their team and all their players. What’s inspiration? It is to motivate and to encourage. They encourage their team players, at times by showing them the best version of themselves. They give courage to all team members, to be at the top and to perform who they can be. At other times, they motivate only by sitting next to them and simply by listening, so to let them self-enlighten to become a higher or better Self.
Do You inspire your team, motivate and give courage to all your team members, and regularly just listen to them?
- Push Right
Lastly, the best manager-coaches push the right buttons. With the right tone and words, they gently but firmly push their team members where they need to be pushed. They are actively behind them. They spur them. They cheer them forward and upward.
Do You push all your team members, regularly and in the right way?
If You watched the World Cup and You saw the Champions, Croatia or France, as a manager-coach, you can replicate and be also a like them. You can also create a winning Team: know your team members, empower them, use constantly positive, constructive language, inspire them and push them the right way!
